Genres built on a puzzle to be solved or a target to be mocked: detective fiction's investigative plot, absurdist fiction's illogical or meaningless premise played for unease or comedy, and satire's direct mockery of a real subject through exaggeration. Belongs here: a genre whose defining device is investigation, absurdity or ridicule. Does not belong here: comedy in its classical dramatic sense, tracked under dramatic genres above, even where a work in this group is also comic in tone.
