Web Fiction

Web Fiction is literature written and released primarily or solely on the internet, most often serialized in installments as chapters are completed rather than published as a finished whole. The practice continues an older tradition of serialized newspaper and magazine fiction, and web-based storytelling dates to the earliest years of the World Wide Web, with the interactive, journal-style serial The Spot, running from 1995 to 1997, an early popular example; the form has grown substantially in popularity and reach since 2008. Dedicated platforms such as Wattpad, Royal Road, ScribbleHub and Webnovel now provide the infrastructure for publishing, discovering and monetizing serialized fiction, often adding features such as reader comments, tags and character profiles that let a story's audience interact with it as it is being written. The form has become an especially large commercial market in China, where web fiction revenue has been reported at more than 2.5 billion dollars.
