El diablo cojuelo

Satirical and Picaresque Fiction

El diablo cojuelo, published in English as The Limping Devil, is the only novel and most famous work of the Spanish writer Luis Vélez de Guevara, published in 1641. Its story follows a student who releases the devil from a flask in which a magician had trapped him; in gratitude, the devil shows the student the interiors of houses so the two can observe their inhabitants in private. The French writer Alain-René Lesage later adapted it into his own novel, Le Diable boiteux. The Limping Devil (Spanish: El diablo cojuelo) is the most famous work of Luis Vélez de Guevara and his only novel, published in 1641. In 1918 an edition published by Francisco Rodríguez Marín became well known. The story is about a student that takes the devil out of a flask where a magician had locked him. The devil, grateful, shows the student the interior of houses (as if they were toys).
