El Criticón is a Spanish allegorical novel by Baltasar Gracián, published in three parts in 1651, 1653 and 1657. It follows a character named Andrenio through an allegorical journey representing the stages of life, presenting an epic tale that lays out Gracián's philosophy of the world. Two virtuous protagonists in the story escape mediocrity to reach lasting fame, but the overall vision of the novel is pessimistic and bleak, drawing together and extending the ideas of Gracián's earlier philosophical writing.
