Ayi Kwei Armah is a Ghanaian writer, born in 1939 in the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, best known for his novels The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1968), Two Thousand Seasons (1973) and The Healers (1978). Belonging to the generation of African writers who came after Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka, he has also written essays, poetry, short stories and children's books over a career spanning several decades. His fiction is noted for its unsparing examination of post-independence disillusionment in Ghana and elsewhere in Africa, and for a broader pan-African consciousness that runs through his historical and speculative novels alike.
