Neoclassicism

Also Known As Augustan Literature
Early Modern and Neoclassical Movements

A movement in literature and the arts that drew directly on the models and ideals of Greek and Roman classical antiquity, prizing order, proportion and restraint over ornament or unconstrained feeling. Its English literary form is usually called Augustan literature, a related but distinct term from the visual-arts movement of the same broader name. Neoclassicism emerged as a Western cultural movement in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that drew inspiration from the art and culture of classical antiquity. In English, the term Neoclassicism is used primarily of the visual arts; the similar movement in English literature, which began considerably earlier, is called Augustan literature.

When did English literary neoclassicism (the Augustan Age) begin?

Standard references date the Augustan Age's end precisely, to Alexander Pope's and Jonathan Swift's deaths in 1744 and 1745, but describe its starting boundary only as falling within the reigns of Anne, George I and George II, and the source's own text calls the period's boundary points generally vague.

What would resolve this A literary-historical source anchoring the Augustan Age to a specific inaugurating work, event or year rather than a reign-level range.
