An English poet, translator and satirist, and the leading poetic voice of Augustan (Neoclassical) literature, best known for his satirical and discursive poetry: An Essay on Criticism (1711), The Rape of the Lock (1712-1717), The Dunciad (1728-1743), and his verse translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Born to a Catholic family at a time when Catholics were barred from university and public office, he was largely self-educated. From age twelve he suffered Pott disease (spinal tuberculosis), which stunted his growth and caused lifelong pain.
