Though reportedly apolitical in the 1930s, he moved in antifascist circles and served a short sentence as a political prisoner; after the war he joined the Italian Communist Party and worked on its newspaper, L'Unita. He suffered from depression and political disillusionment in his final years and died by suicide in 1950.
