Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was a Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer who lived from 1839 to 1908 and is widely regarded as the greatest writer of Brazilian literature; born in Rio de Janeiro to a poor family that included grandparents who had been enslaved, he was largely self taught and never attended university. In 1897 he founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters and became its first president, and his fiction, shaping the realist movement in Brazil through its wit and critique of society, produced what are generally regarded as his greatest works, the novels Dom Casmurro (1899), Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Quincas Borba, alongside the widely admired 1893 short story A Missa do Galo.
