Octavio Paz Lozano was a Mexican poet, essayist and diplomat who lived from 1914 to 1998. His body of work was recognized with numerous major honors, including the 1981 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the 1982 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature, and he combined a career as a diplomat with sustained writing on Mexican identity, surrealism and poetics that made him one of the most influential Spanish language writers of the twentieth century.
