The Mystery of the Black Jungle is an adventure novel by the Italian writer Emilio Salgari, first published in 1895 and later translated into English. Set in the Black Jungle of the Sundarbans in India, it follows the tiger and snake hunter Tremal-Naik after he encounters a beautiful young woman who vanishes as quickly as she appears, and then faces strange music and unexplained deaths connected to a priestess named Ada and to thugs who worship the goddess Kali. The novel centers on Tremal-Naik's growing romance with Ada as he confronts dangers threatening British India, and it introduces Salgari's best known character, Sandokan, the Tiger of Malaysia, who would go on to anchor the wider Sandokan series.
