Abigail

Abigail, published in Hungarian as Abigel, is a 1970 young adult novel by Hungarian writer Magda Szabo. Set during the Second World War, it follows a teenage girl sent to a strict Calvinist girls' boarding school in eastern Hungary for her own safety, where she must adapt to the school's rigid rules while a hidden protector, known only as Abigail, watches over the students. The novel ranked sixth in the 2005 Hungarian Big Read poll and is regarded as one of the most popular Hungarian novels of the twentieth century, with an English translation by Len Rix published in 2020.
