Verse traditions of the Germanic and northern European peoples, including the German minnesang of the Middle High German love song and the Old Norse thula of metrical name lists and poetic synonyms. A genre belongs here when its cited article places it in the poetry of the Germanic literatures or another northern European tradition. It excludes the Occitan troubadour lyric, which has its own group, and the Irish and Welsh bardic poetry, which also has its own group, so that each tradition can be compared with the others on its own terms.
