Street Theatre

Street theatre is a form of theatrical presentation staged in outdoor public spaces, such as shopping centres, car parks, recreational reserves, university campuses and street corners, without a designated paying audience. Performers range from solo buskers to organized theatre companies, and the genre favors simple costumes, minimal props and physical forms such as dance, mime and slapstick, since amplification is often unavailable and performances must be highly visible to draw and hold a crowd. Historically among the earliest forms of theatre, with many other theatrical genres, including religious passion plays, tracing their roots to street performance, it remains a way of offering free public entertainment to audiences who cannot attend conventional venues, and some performers, including Robin Williams and David Bowie, began their careers performing in the street.
