Musar Literature

Musar literature is a genre of didactic Jewish ethical writing describing virtues and vices and the path toward character improvement, spanning works from early Jewish texts through contemporary compositions in a continuous tradition of moral instruction within Jewish culture. The genre systematically presents moral and spiritual perfection divided according to the component parts of an ideal righteous life, typically analyzing and explaining how to achieve each moral virtue in a separate chapter or section of an author's ethical system, aiming to shape the everyday behavior, thought and beliefs of its readers through accessible instruction. Musar literature is distinguished from related genres by its didactic focus, differing from aggadic narrative and from halakhic legal literature, and encompasses philosophical, rabbinic, mystical and modern variations within one coherent body of Jewish ethical writing.
