Kibyoshi is a genre of Japanese picture book produced in the middle of the Edo period, from 1775 into the early nineteenth century, identifiable by its yellow backed covers. It is considered the first purely adult comic book form in Japanese literature, with a large picture spanning each page and descriptive prose and dialogue filling the blank spaces around the image.
