Javanese historical texts form a large body of Javanese literature, including laudatory poems, chronicles, and travelogues, in which writers interpret the how and why of past events from a Javanese point of view. These texts are an important source for understanding Javanese perspectives on history, and scholars of Javanese history have given considerable attention to theoretical questions about how to weigh Javanese historiography fairly against Western historiography, drawing on both Old and Modern Javanese written sources as well as archaeological and epigraphic material in a debate that continues today.
