Gosos are devotional and paraliturgical folk songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ or a saint, composed in Catalan, Sardinian or Spanish and characteristic of the Catalan Countries and Sardinia. Sung during religious ceremonies, processions, pilgrimages and votive festivals, the earliest written record of the form appears in the Chronicle of Muntaner from the 1320s, and a major collection of more than thirty thousand compositions is held by the Library of Catalonia.
