Fonnker

World Traditional Verse Forms

Fonnker is, in Reunion Creole, a state of mind conveying a deep feeling of love, happiness, bitterness, emotion or thought, its name coming from the French phrase for bottom of one's heart. The term extends to the modes of expression, particularly Reunionnais poetry, that externalize this state of mind, to the point that fonnker can be used as a synonym for poem, and it is practiced by artists such as Danyel Waro and Ann O'aro and celebrated by an annual festival.
