Exemplum

Epic and Heroic Narrative

An exemplum is a moral anecdote, brief or extended and either real or invented, told to illustrate a point, a device long used in preaching and moral instruction. The Latin term, meaning example, also describes an action performed by someone else that serves as a model to be followed.
