Class S, also known as esu kankei, is a social practice that emerged in early twentieth-century Japan, most commonly expressed as a strong bond or romantic friendship between schoolgirls or between female students and their teachers, and the term is also used for the literary genre depicting such relationships. The S is slang drawn from the first letter of the English word sister.
