Buraanbur

Buraanbur is a genre of traditional Somali poetry composed and performed primarily by women, often with drumming and dancing at weddings and community gatherings. It functions as the female counterpart to gabay, the male-dominated epic poetry of Somali literary tradition, and has been described as the highest women's literary genre, encompassing subdivisions such as hoyal, hobeeyo and sitaat religious verse. Its themes center on women's experiences, especially child-rearing and marriage, but buraanbur poets have also used the genre to address broader social and political concerns, historically becoming a medium through which Somali women mobilized their communities and challenged seclusion during independence and anti-colonial movements.
