Breviary

A breviary is a liturgical book used in Christianity for praying the canonical hours, traditionally recited at seven fixed prayer times each day. Different breviaries were historically used across Christendom, and the Roman Breviary eventually became the standard within the Roman Catholic Church until it was later replaced by the Liturgy of the Hours; other traditions, including Lutheran churches, continue to use their own breviaries, such as the Brotherhood Prayer Book. Medieval breviaries were sometimes elaborately decorated, and several, including the Belleville Breviary and the Isabella Breviary, survive as notable illuminated manuscripts.
