Eric Arthur Blair, known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist and critic whose work is marked by lucid prose, social criticism and opposition to totalitarianism of every kind, alongside support for democratic socialism. He is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), and his non-fiction includes The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his service in the Spanish Civil War. His influence endures in the adjective Orwellian and in terms he coined such as Big Brother, Thought Police and doublethink; in 2008 The Times named him the second-greatest British writer since 1945.
