Uttam Ghosh

South Asian Literature

Uttam Ghosh is a Bengali author best known for Harry Potter Kolkataye, known in English as Harry Potter in Calcutta. The book, described as a semi fake translation, brings Harry Potter to Calcutta in the dream of a young fan, although the bulk of it retells the events of the first Harry Potter novel. It became a bestseller in West Bengal and sold about five thousand copies at the February 2003 Kolkata Book Fair before lawyers acting for J. K. Rowling took enforcement action against it in April 2003. The book is an example of the unauthorized translation market that existed in Bengal before legitimate editions of the Harry Potter novels appeared.

Quote, Works Attributed: Harry Potter in Calcutta, April 2003 crack-down section
In it, Harry Potter comes to Calcutta in the dream of a young fan of the books-kind of an elaborate fan-fic. However, the fact that the books author, Uttam Ghosh, glossed over in his interviews is that the bulk of the book is Harry’s account of the events of Philosopher’s Stone.
