Pope Pius II

Italian Literature

Pope Pius II, also known as Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, was a writer who became pope. His literary gifts brought him to the attention of Emperor Frederick III, who crowned him imperial poet. His writings include the novel Eurialus and Lucretia, often called The Tale of Two Lovers, the comedy Chrysis, historical works on the Council of Basel, on Frederick III and on Bohemia, geographical and ethnographic descriptions, and his Memoirs, the only autobiography left by a pope. He kept writing throughout his pontificate, and collections of his works were printed at Basel in 1551 and 1571.
