Walter Scott

British and Irish Literature

Sir Walter Scott, first Baronet, was a Scottish novelist, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of European and Scottish literature. He is known for his Waverley novels, published from 1814 to 1831, which were for nearly a century among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe. He was born in 1771 and died in 1832. He was also known for his narrative poems Marmion and The Lady of the Lake, and he greatly influenced European and American literature. By profession an advocate and legal administrator, he combined writing with his daily work as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.
