Jerzy Andrzejewski lived from 19 August 1909 to 19 April 1983 and was a prolific Polish writer whose works confront controversial moral questions such as betrayal, the fate of the Jews and the experience of Auschwitz in wartime. His novels Ashes and Diamonds, about the immediate post-war situation in Poland, and Holy Week, which treats the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, were both adapted for the screen by the Polish director Andrzej Wajda, and both have been translated into English. His novel The Gates of Paradise was translated into English by James Kirkup and published under the anglicised name George Andrzeyevski.
