Georges Bernanos, in full Louis Émile Clément Georges Bernanos, lived from 20 February 1888 to 5 July 1948 and was a French author who also served as a soldier in the First World War. A Catholic with monarchist leanings, he was critical of elitist thought and opposed what he saw as defeatism, which he believed had led to the defeat and occupation of France in 1940. His two best-known novels, Sous le soleil de Satan of 1926 and Journal d'un cure de campagne of 1936, both revolve around a parish priest who struggles against evil and despair. Most of his novels have been translated into English and published in Britain and the United States.
