Shi Nai'an

East and Southeast Asian Literature

Shi Nai'an was a Chinese writer of the Yuan and early Ming periods, said to have lived from about 1296 to 1372. Shuihu zhuan, known in English as Water Margin and one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, is traditionally attributed to him, though the attribution has been discussed by scholars. Little is known about him. Traditionally he was believed to have been a teacher of Luo Guanzhong, and late Ming and early Qing scholars claimed that he lived near the end of the Yuan dynasty and came from Hangzhou.
