Author of Walden (1854), an account of two years spent in a cabin on land Emerson owned at Walden Pond, and of the 1849 essay known since his death as Civil Disobedience. Part of Emerson's Concord circle from the early 1840s; Emerson urged him to keep the journal that became the source of most of his later published prose.
