Xu Zhonglin

East and Southeast Asian Literature

Xu Zhonglin was a Chinese fantasy novelist who lived during the Ming dynasty and died in 1560. He is best known as the author of the sixteenth-century semi-mythical novel Investiture of the Gods, called Fengshen Yanyi in Chinese. He was born in Yingtian Prefecture, in present-day Nanjing. The second section of one printing of the novel is inscribed as edited by Xu Zhonglin, the Old Recluse of Mount Zhong, which is likely the source of his possible pseudonym Zhongshan Yisou.
