Francisco de Quevedo

Iberian and Latin American Literature

Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas, Knight of the Order of Santiago, was a Spanish nobleman, politician and writer of the Baroque era. Along with his lifelong rival Luis de Góngora, he was one of the most prominent Spanish poets of the age. Born in 1580 and dying in 1645, he also wrote satirical prose, including the picaresque novel The Swindler. His style is characterized by what was called conceptismo, which stood in stark contrast to the culteranismo of Góngora.
