Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American writer of weird, horror, fantasy and science fiction, born in Providence, Rhode Island. He is best remembered for inventing the Cthulhu Mythos. His legacy is also apparent in terms such as Lovecraftian horror and in an enduring fandom. He spent most of his life in New England. His father was institutionalized in 1893 and his mother in 1919, and he wrote essays for the United Amateur Press Association and in 1913 wrote a critical letter to a pulp magazine that led to his involvement in pulp fiction.
