Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell was an American novelist and journalist. She wrote only one novel that was published during her lifetime, the American Civil War-era novel Gone with the Wind, for which she won the National Book Award for Fiction for the Most Distinguished Novel of 1936. Born in 1900 and dying in 1949. Gone with the Wind also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. Long after her death, a collection of her girlhood writings and a novella she wrote as a teenager, Lost Laysen, were published, and a collection of her newspaper articles for The Atlanta Journal was republished as a book.
