Rachel Carson

American Literature

Rachel Louise Carson lived from 27 May 1907 to 14 April 1964 and was an American marine biologist, writer and conservationist whose sea trilogy, published from 1941 to 1955, and book Silent Spring of 1962 are credited with advancing marine conservation and the global environmental movement. She began as an aquatic biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries and became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s. Her 1951 bestseller The Sea Around Us won a National Book Award and brought her recognition and financial security, which led to the republication of her first book, Under the Sea Wind, in 1952. In Silent Spring she turned to the problems she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides.
