FAQs

Is a genre of Classical Chinese poetry the same thing as a poetic form?

Genre here means subject matter, imagery and style, and it was generally but not always independent of poetic form.

Not quite. In this context the word genre refers to topic, theme and subject matter, to which similes or metaphors were considered appropriate and how they would be interpreted, and to vocabulary and style. These genres were generally, but not always, independent of the Classical Chinese poetry forms, so a single genre could be written in different forms.
