We

Speculative Fiction

We is a dystopian novel by the Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, written in Russian under the title My between 1920 and 1921, though the original text was not published in the Soviet Union until 1988; an English translation by Gregory Zilboorg appeared first, in 1924, through the New York publisher E. P. Dutton. Set in a rigidly conformist future society called the One State, the novel follows D-503, a spacecraft engineer, as he begins to rebel against a totalitarian order built on mathematical planning, surveillance and the suppression of individuality. Widely regarded as a foundational and highly influential work of twentieth-century dystopian fiction, We is credited with shaping the later dystopias of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, both of which are already live on this atlas.
