Quo Vadis (novel)

Historical Fiction and Romance

Quo Vadis, subtitled A Narrative of the Time of Nero, is a novel by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz, serialized in 1895 and 1896 and published as a book in 1896. Written in Polish and grounded in extensive research into Roman history, it is set in Rome under the emperor Nero between roughly AD 64 and 68 and tells of the love between Marcus Vinicius, a young Roman patrician, and Lygia, a Christian woman held as a hostage, against the backdrop of Nero's persecution of Christians. The novel has been translated into more than fifty languages and adapted repeatedly for stage, film, television and opera, and it contributed to Sienkiewicz's award of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905.

FAQs

Was Quo Vadis the book that won Henryk Sienkiewicz the Nobel Prize in Literature?

The 1905 Nobel citation praises him as an epic writer and names no single book, though Quo Vadis is his best-known novel.

Not by name. Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905, and the Nobel Foundation gives the prize motivation as "because of his outstanding merits as an epic writer", which cites his body of work as an epic writer rather than one title. The Foundation does describe Quo Vadis, published in 1895 and set in the Rome of the emperor Nero, as his best-known novel, so it was a central part of the reputation behind the award without being singled out in the citation.
