A poem by the American poet Langston Hughes, written in 1925 and first published that year in the Urban League magazine Opportunity, before becoming the title poem of his 1926 debut collection of the same name. It renders the rhythm and feeling of blues music in verse form through a Harlem pianist's late-night performance, and it is regarded as a foundational work of the Harlem Renaissance's engagement with African American vernacular music. What happens in the poem The Weary Blues?
A speaker listens to a pianist play and sing the blues on Lenox Avenue until the singer goes to bed.
The speaker describes a night on Lenox Avenue when he hears a pianist swaying on a rickety stool and playing a sad, raggy tune. The pianist then sings a blues about having nobody in all this world but himself, and about not being happy any more and wishing he had died. He croons far into the night. At the end the singer stops playing and goes to bed, and the Weary Blues echo through his head as he sleeps like a rock.
