A 1959 antinovel by the American author William S. Burroughs, first published as The Naked Lunch. Structured as a nonlinear sequence of loosely connected episodes narrated by the heroin-addicted William Lee, it draws on Burroughs's own addiction and travels and became a landmark of the Beat Generation, surviving a prominent obscenity trial in Massachusetts in the 1960s that helped establish stronger First Amendment protection for literature in the United States. Where does the title Naked Lunch come from?
It began as Allen Ginsberg's misreading of a line in Burroughs' novel Queer.
The phrase began as a mangled quote from Burroughs' unfinished novel Queer. Allen Ginsberg misread the phrase "a leer of nakedlust wrenched" as "a leer of naked lunch", and Jack Kerouac encouraged Burroughs to use Ginsberg's version as a title.
