What does the title The Name of the Rose mean?
Eco chose it as a deliberately neutral title, because the rose has so many meanings it hardly has any left.
Umberto Eco said he wanted a totally neutral title, and accounts of how he arrived at this one differ. In the Postscript to the novel, he says he chose it because the rose is a symbolic figure so rich in meanings that by now it hardly has any meaning left. He also suggested that the title disorients the reader, allowing multiple interpretations rather than a prescribed one.
