The Betrothed is a historical novel by the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, known in Italian as I promessi sposi, first published in three volumes between 1825 and 1827 and then substantially revised and republished between 1840 and 1842. Often called the most famous and widely read novel in the Italian language, it is set in the Duchy of Milan under Spanish Habsburg rule between 1628 and 1630 and follows the peasant couple Renzo and Lucia as a corrupt local nobleman and a web of legal and political obstacles repeatedly prevent their marriage. Beyond its central love story, the novel is particularly renowned for its vivid depiction of the plague that devastated Milan around 1630, and it examines the illusory nature of political power, injustice within the legal system, and moral complexity within the Catholic clergy, ranging from the cowardly parish priest Don Abbondio to the heroic Friar Padre Cristoforo, drawing on the historical chronicles of Giuseppe Ripamonti for its portrait of the era.
