The Maltese Falcon is a 1930 detective novel by the American writer Dashiell Hammett, originally serialized in the pulp magazine Black Mask beginning with its September 1929 issue. It is written entirely in external third-person narration, describing only what characters say and do and how they look, with no direct access to any character's thoughts or feelings. The novel is considered a founding work of the hardboiled crime genre, which Hammett did much to popularize, and it has been adapted for film several times.
