The Diary of a Young Girl

Nonfiction Prose

The Diary of a Young Girl, widely known as The Diary of Anne Frank, is a published edition of the diary Anne Frank kept in Dutch while she and her family hid from Nazi persecution in an annex of an Amsterdam building between June 1942 and August 1944, under the original title Het Achterhuis, meaning The Annex. Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945; her diary was recovered after the family's arrest by Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, two of the people who had helped hide them, and was given to her father, Otto Frank, the only member of the immediate family to survive the war. The diary was first published in Dutch in Amsterdam in 1947 and appeared in English translation in 1952, going on to be translated into more than seventy languages. It documents Anne Frank's daily life, relationships and reflections during roughly two years in hiding, and it stands as one of the most widely read personal accounts of the Holocaust, offering both a specific historical record and an intimate portrait of a young writer's inner life under extreme confinement and danger.
