The Lady with the Dog

Short Fiction and Fable

The Lady with the Dog is a short story by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov, published in Russian in December 1899 in the magazine Russkaya Mysl under the title Dama s sobachkoy, with an English translation following in 1903. The story follows Dmitri Gurov, an unhappily married Moscow banker, who begins an affair with Anna Sergeyevna, a young married woman he meets while both are vacationing separately in Yalta, and traces the unexpected emotional transformation the affair produces in Gurov as the two continue to meet in secret after returning to their separate lives. Vladimir Nabokov called it one of the greatest short stories ever written, praising Chekhov specifically for ending the story without the clear resolution conventional fiction of the period typically demanded, and it remains one of Chekhov's most widely read and adapted works across film, theater and ballet.
