Rhinoceros

Drama and Theatre

Rhinoceros is an absurdist play by the French-Romanian writer Eugene Ionesco, written in French and first performed in 1959 in Dusseldorf. The play depicts the inhabitants of a small French provincial town undergoing a bizarre, escalating transformation into rhinoceroses, with only the ordinary, initially unremarkable protagonist Berenger resisting the change as everyone around him succumbs to it. Ionesco uses the town's gradual, almost casual acceptance of this mass transformation to dramatize how people adopt conformist ideologies and abandon independent, critical thought, and the play is widely read as a commentary on the rise of fascism and Nazism and on the erosion of humanist values under mass movements; though often categorized within the Theatre of the Absurd, its interpretation extends well beyond that single framework.

FAQs

What was Rhinoceros written in response to?

Mainly the spread of fascism, which Ionesco watched take over friends and students in 1930s Romania.

The play is often read as a response to the rise of Fascism and Nazism before the Second World War. Eugène Ionesco himself, in a 1970 interview, described its message as an attack on those Romanians who were caught up in the ideological contagion of the fascist Iron Guard, which he had watched pull in his friends and fellow students in the 1930s. The townspeople who turn into rhinoceroses stand for people who adopt a mass movement one by one, while Bérenger is the lone person who does not.
