Killdozer!

Speculative Fiction

Killdozer! is a science fiction and horror novella by Theodore Sturgeon, written in nine days in 1944 and revised in 1959. After an opening account of an ancient war between an empire and an alien energy force, the story moves to the Second World War, when a construction crew on a Pacific island breaks open a buried ancient shelter while quarrying stone and releases an alien weapon that possesses their Caterpillar D7 bulldozer. The machine hunts the surviving workers until they manage to destroy it by electrocuting it with an arc welder connected to water. The novella became one of Sturgeon's most famous and financially successful stories and won the Retro Hugo Award for Best Novella in 2020.
