Did Mikhail Sholokhov really write And Quiet Flows the Don?
Authorship has been disputed since writers such as Solzhenitsyn accused Sholokhov of plagiarism; Norwegian scholars found its language consistent with his other work.
His authorship has been disputed. Several writers, among them Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, publicly accused Sholokhov of plagiarism and claimed that the novel reworked another writer's manuscript, and Fyodor Kryukov, a Don region writer who died in 1920, is the figure most often cited as the source. Against this, a group of Norwegian literary scholars used statistical analysis of the novel's language and concluded that it is closely related to the rest of Sholokhov's work. Britannica reports both sides of the dispute.
