Yevgeny Zamyatin

Russian and Slavic Literature

Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin was a Russian author of science fiction, philosophy, literary criticism and political satire, and the son of a Russian Orthodox priest. Born in 1884 and dying in 1937, he wrote the dystopian novel We. He abandoned Christianity at an early age and became a Bolshevik, and as a member of the pre-revolutionary underground he was repeatedly arrested, beaten, imprisoned and exiled. He was just as disturbed by the policies of the Communist Party after the October Revolution as he had been by tsarist policy.
